Acupuncture
Traditional Acupuncture is an holistic health care system (originating from China and other far eastern cultures) which regards pain and illness whether physical, mental or emotional as a sign that the body is out of balance.
Acupuncture works to help restore and maintain your body’s equilibrium through the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of Qi (pronounced chee), your body’s vital energy. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, Qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in symptoms of pain, illness or disease. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual and treatment plans are tailored specifically for you to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony. Traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person and the root of your condition(s) rather than specific symptoms in isolation and can be effective for a range of conditions whether physical, mental and/or emotional.
Fiona’s acupuncture practice is rooted in Five Element Traditional Acupuncture, which incorporates a more gentle needling technique alongside additional treatments such as moxibustion, cupping and/or Gua Sha if required to help harmonise the body’s energy (Qi) flow.
Your consultation and treatments
Free preliminary consultation
Fiona offers a free 20 minute, no obligation consultation either by phone or in person in my clinic to help you decide whether acupuncture is an appropriate treatment choice for you.
Initial Consultation
Your initial consultation will last between 1 to 1.5 hours. This is a diagnostic consultation during which Fiona will ask you questions regarding your main complaint, other symptoms, as well as your lifestyle, general health, medical history, medication, supplements or other treatments, sleep patterns, diet and emotional wellbeing to give an overall picture of your health and wellbeing.
There will also be a short, non-invasive physical examination including taking your pulses on your wrists, looking at your tongue and gentle palpation of your abdomen and key acupuncture points to provide information on the balance of your body’s energy.
On the basis of this consultation, Fiona will then make a formal Chinese Medicine diagnosis and plan your future treatments specifically tailored for you.
Treatments
The first treatment will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours with subsequent treatments generally lasting between 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of ultra-fine, single use, sterile needles in to acupuncture points which Fiona will select according to your symptoms and underlying energy pattern. Points may be located on your arms, legs, abdomen, back and/or head. Your treatment may also include the following treatment techniques if appropriate: moxibustion, auricular acupuncture, cupping therapy or Gua Sha. See
