Massage
Please see our separate pages on Massage Therapy and details of our Practitioners who offer the type of massage you require.
Massage is one of the oldest forms of medicine and the term derives from the Greek Massein, "to knead", with references to this therapy dating as far back as 3,000 B.C in Chinese literature. Homer wrote that after the Trojan War women "rubbed and anointed the war heroes" and Hippocrates in 400 B.C speaks that, "rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose and loosen a joint that is too rigid".
Historians have noted that Julius Caesar "pinched daily for neuralgia" and Celsus promoted rubbing the head to relieve chronic pains, but it was Galen, accredited with discovering blood in arteries, who identified that by assisting venous flow towards the heart blood flow away from the heart is encouraged and thus the benefits of massage for the whole body was muted.
Acupressure Massage
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, our bodies are manifestations of energy known as Qi. In health the different aspects of this energy, Yin and Yang, flow in harmony. If the flow of Qi becomes disrupted there is disharmony which can manifest in various health disorders.
Remedial Massage
Using MET (Muscle Energy Techniques), STR (Soft Tissue Release) and passive stretching, conditions can often be improved. Together with helpful (and realistic) suggestions for exercises and perhaps positive lifestyle adjustments quality of life can be enhanced and pain managed.
Sports Massage
The Sports Massage Therapist uses techniques for promoting sporting performance and injury prevention and injury treatment and rehabilitation for both amateur and professional athletes and works closely with their nutritionists, coaches and physiotherapists to promote optimum performance.
Please note that some illnesses, medical conditions and injuries are contra-indicated for massage and during the consultation your therapist will discuss your individual medical history prior to treatment.
